The goal is to create an integrated hydrogen economy around the Baltic Sea, enabling self-sufficient energy and minimising carbon emissions from different industries, with the necessary infrastructure, such as gas pipelines and electricity grids, already existing in the Gulf of Finland.

The project includes 40 partners from nine Baltic Sea area countries and will combine local areas into a broader valley to support creating an integrated, interregional hydrogen economy.

BalticSeaH2 projects enables 25 demonstration and investment cases to showcase the different sectors of the hydrogen economy, totalling up to over $4,000m ($4,293) in total investments. By the end of the project, the production potential for hydrogen is expected to reach 100,000 tonnes annually, which is to be utilised or sold by different industries brought together via the project.

Lasting five years, the consortium includes partners from Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Germany, Denmark, Norway and Sweden. CLIC Innovation is the project coordinator, with Gasgrid Finland acting as co-coordinator. The projects total volume is €33m ($35m), with €25m ($26.8m) in funding from the EU.

It will support the reduction of carbon emissions from marine traffic and Gasgrid Finland is already preparing hydrogen infrastructure: the Nordic-Baltic Hydrogen Corridor; Baltic Sea Hydrogen Collector; and Nordic Hydrogen Route.

Finland unveiled its National Hydrogen Roadmap in 2020, which highlighted the ‘key role’ hydrogen will play in combating climate change and reaching its national goal of carbon neutrality by 2035.
