The Colombian firm announced on Monday (May 23), that it had selected Total Eren, EDF, Siemens Energy, H2B2, Empati, and Mitsui, as strategic allies to advance its ‘Strategic Plan of Low-Carbon Hydrogen’.

The plan  sets targets for Ectropetrol  to produce one million tonnes of low-carbon hydrogen per year, by 2040, with the company estimating annual investments of $140m.

From next June, the companies will begin work to develop the plan, with specific projects to decarbonise the production of hydrogen at Ecopetrol’s refineries, as well as establishing initiatives for industrial use and sustainable mobility.

The alliance hopes to achieve competitiveness of low-carbon hydrogen production cost, open opportunities for financing and investment while integrating supply chains, identifying markets, and boost access to renewable energies.

Felipe Bayón, CEO of Ecopetrol, said, “We continue working in the development of our plan of low-carbon hydrogen production that seeks to diversify the portfolio and decarbonise our operations.

“Currently we have 18 opportunities and initiatives in progress, and these alliances with specialised companies will robust our plan to achieve the goals that we have set in our strategy 2040 Energy that Transform.”

In March 2021, Ecopetrol announced that it was developing a 50kW PEM electrolyser, coupled 270 solar panels to produce 20kg of green hydrogen per day, for three months.
